Thanks to more than 1,000 agreements with placement centres, our students on the Master’s in Teacher Training will have access to: 

• State, state-subsidised and private schools in the following regions where we have agreements: the Canary Islands, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, the Community of Madrid, the Region of Murcia, Navarre, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands*. 
• Private and state-subsidised schools with a private section: Andalusia, the Principality of Asturias, Galicia, Castile and León, and the Valencian Community.
• Due to the devolution of powers in the field of education, it is not possible to undertake teaching placements in the following regions: Cantabria and Melilla. Nor can placements be guaranteed in Aragon and Ceuta.

*In the Balearic Islands, although there are no specific agreements in place, regional regulations allow students to undertake placements in state, private and state-subsidised schools.

The Alfonso X el Sabio University (UAX) and Empieza Por Educar (ExE) have been collaborating for years with a common goal: to promote equal opportunities in education, training future teachers who want to make a real impact on society.

ExE is a non-profit organisation that develops the "ExE Programme " to train young people and professionals who teach in schools in disadvantaged environments, combining practical teaching with training and accompaniment. Thanks to its alliance with UAX, the participants study the Master's Degree in Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and Language Teaching and obtain the official qualification as teachers.

In addition to academic training, the collaboration includes educational innovation initiatives such as the Makers projects, in which students apply their knowledge in real contexts, developing actions such as:

• Evaluation of the comprehensive impact of the ExE Programme on educational equity.
• Design and deployment of key workshops in seminar format.
• Creation of teaching materials on neuroscience and emotions for ESO.

Take your in-person exams at our designated centres in Spain and Latin America, so you can choose the location that best suits your needs. Centres are subject to availability and capacity.

The master's degree in teacher training is aimed at graduates who wish to teach in Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training or Language Teaching and who have sufficient training in the subjects corresponding to their chosen speciality (consult for specialities, preferential access qualifications and related qualifications).

Note on professional attachment: The Master's degree is a necessary but not sufficient condition to work as a Secondary Education Teacher. In public schools, it is necessary to pass the corresponding competitive examination. In private and state-subsidised schools, the requirements are established in Royal Decree 860/2010 of 2 July and Royal Decree 665/2015 of 17 July, which regulates the initial training conditions for teachers in private schools to teach in Compulsory Secondary Education or Baccalaureate. Vocational education and training and special education also have other specific regulations. The application of these regulations may vary in the different Autonomous Communities. In case of doubt, it is advisable to consult the corresponding services of the public administrations.

Taking a double specialisation: This option is not part of the academic offer, given that, in accordance with Royal Decree 860/2010, of 2 July, and Royal Decree 665/2015, of 17 July, teaching in secondary education depends on the undergraduate university qualifications that the candidate holds, while the specialisation taken in the master's degree has an exclusively educational-pedagogical function.

Weighting of admission criteria when demand exceeds the Master's degree offer

The admission tests for the Master's Degree in Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and Language Teaching are as follows:

1. Psychopedagogical assessment of the different skills required of a university student, depending on the studies he/she has chosen, the previous knowledge necessary to successfully complete the studies he/she wishes to take and, in particular, for this Master's Degree, his/her aptitude for teaching.
2. Proof of level in the foreign language chosen by the student that guarantees a command of a foreign language equivalent to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, in accordance with ORDER ECI/3858/2007, of 27 December, in section 4.2. Students applying for admission to the speciality of Foreign Language: English must show a level of knowledge of English equivalent to B2 according to the CEFR. Students will be exempt from taking this English language level test if they can provide an official certificate accrediting the required level of English.
3. Exam that accredits adequate training in the disciplinary content corresponding to the chosen speciality. This test can only be taken by students who do not have a degree that is completely related, in terms of its subject area, to the speciality they wish to study.
4. Interview carried out online by the director of the Master's Degree, where the candidate's attitude towards teaching will be assessed, as well as their aptitude for teaching.

Alfonso X El Sabio University has approved and published a regulation adapted to Royal Decree 1393/2007 to deal with the transfer and recognition of credits.

Among its articles it is stated that the recognition of credits in official Master's degree courses will be carried out taking into account the adequacy between the competences and knowledge derived from the courses taken and those foreseen in the syllabus of the corresponding courses.

The following criteria will be followed:

• Credits taken in official non-university higher education courses may not be recognised.
• Credits taken in the degree programmes of the institution itself may not be recognised.
• Credits taken as a result of accreditation of work experience may not be recognised.
• The number of credits that are subject to recognition based on professional or work experience may not exceed, as a whole, 15 per cent of the total number of credits that make up the syllabus.

You will be able to gain direct entry to the Master’s degree in Teacher Training, depending on your university degree or official qualifications relevant to the specialism. There is no provision for undertaking specific supplementary training if the entry qualification is not entirely relevant, in terms of its subject area, to the specialism you wish to study or, where applicable, you fail to pass the examination certifying adequate knowledge of the subject matter corresponding to your chosen specialism. The UAX Master’s Degree in Teaching for Secondary Education (ESO and Bachillerato), Vocational Training and Language Teaching lasts one academic year and is an official degree worth 60 ECTS credits.

The Master’s in Teacher Training legally qualifies you to teach at Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) level, at Sixth Form level, in Vocational Training (FP) and in language teaching. Depending on your previous university studies, you will be able to specialise in specific areas of the Master’s programme, which will enable you to teach particular subjects, such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Economics, English, Physical Education, Music, etc.

Furthermore, this Master’s programme provides the pedagogical and didactic training required to teach in Vocational Training centres, as well as meeting the  requirements to practise as a vocational education teacher. Yes, this Master’s Degree in Teacher Training replaces what was previously known as the Certificate of Pedagogical Aptitude (CAP). 

The CAP was discontinued in the 2009/2010 academic year. The current title is the Master’s Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and Sixth Form, Vocational Training and Language Teaching.

It depends on the career path you choose. A Master’s degree in Teacher Training is a compulsory requirement to work as a teacher in secondary education, sixth form, vocational training and language teaching. However, you only need to sit the competitive examination if you wish to secure a post as a civil servant teacher in the state education system.

If your aim is to work in private or state-subsidised schools, you will not normally have to pass a competitive examination, although you will need to hold the relevant qualifying qualification, such as the Master’s in Teacher Training.

For those wishing to pursue a career in state education, it is advisable to start familiarising yourself with the selection process as soon as possible. The salary of a secondary school teacher in Spain depends on the type of school, the autonomous community, seniority and salary supplements. In public education, a secondary school teacher is usually paid approximately 2,600 to 3,100 euros gross per month, although the figure may be increased by three years of service, six years of service, positions of responsibility or specific destination allowances.

In net terms, the salary can be between 1,900 and 2,400 euros per month, depending on income tax withholding and the personal situation of each teacher.

Moreover, salaries are not the same in all autonomous communities, as each one applies its own allowances. In private or state-subsidised schools, conditions may vary according to the agreement and the type of contract.
