The professors of the UAX Bachelor's Degree in Medicine practice in top-level healthcare centres. In addition, we have experts in simulation trained in technological schools in Boston. They will get involved with you so that you enter into a process of trial, reflection, learning and constant evolution. Some of them are:

• Norberto Herrera Merino
  Vice-Dean of the Vice-Deanship of Medicine at the UAX, he is an accredited doctor and specialist in digestive surgery, with a solid track record in teaching and research and outstanding experience at the Severo Ochoa Hospital.
  
• María Victoria Redondo Vega
  Head of Studies of the Degree in Medicine. Doctor in Medicine, specialist in Family Medicine and Coordinator of subjects such as History of Medicine and Digital Health at the UAX, she also directs the Master's Degree in Healthcare Management.
  
• Alfonso Bermejo de la Calzada
  Doctor in Medicine, gynaecologist, expert in assisted human reproduction, with extensive academic and research experience; he is Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies and the Centre Unit in Medicine at the UAX.
  
• María Del Mar Lasso De La Vega Zamora
  Doctor in Medicine and specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, with more than a decade of teaching experience at the Severo Ochoa University Hospital and the UAX; researcher in ototoxicity and coordinator of the subject of Otorhinolaryngology.
  
• Álvaro López Rodríguez
  Doctor in Medicine and expert in Psychiatry, professor in morphology since 1988 and director of five doctoral theses; he was External Evaluator in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the UCM and is Coordinator of Histology.
  
• Benito García Díaz
  Doctor in Pharmacy with more than 30 years in hospital pharmacy, currently at the Severo Ochoa Hospital; professor and coordinator of Pharmacology at the UAX, he stands out in pharmacokinetics and research projects.
  
• Antonio López Román
  Doctor of Medicine, expert in ultrasound and sports medicine, he is Director of the Virtual Simulation Hospital at the UAX, and coordinator of subjects related to physical medicine and integrated paediatrics.
  
• María del Rosario Gómez Vadillo
  Degree in Veterinary Medicine and PhD in Veterinary Science. Master in Protocol Management, Production, Organisation and Design of Events. Professor at the Alfonso X el Sabio University, she has an extensive teaching and research career in the fields of Toxicology, Biology and Legal Medicine, with numerous publications and participation in various scientific projects.
  
• Esther Civantos Martín
  PhD in Biology (specialising in Immunology) from the Fundación Jiménez Díaz, where she developed her thesis on the characterisation and molecular cloning of Salsola kali pollen. She has worked in research in the fields of immunology, diabetic nephropathy and endocrinology, collaborating in projects such as Predimed Plus. With extensive teaching experience at different educational levels and in the Master's Degree in Forensic Dentistry at the UAX, she is currently a lecturer in Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedicine and Veterinary Medicine, coordinating the subject of Immunology in the Degree in Medicine and participating in a project on hyperproteic diet and microbiota.

In addition, we have the heads of service of the medical and surgical specialities of the hospitals with which we have an agreement. These experts will offer personalised training to each student during their rotations.

• The medical curriculum at UAX is based on practical activities testing real clinical situations of increasing complexity. To do this, we incorporate the latest technological advances in advanced simulation as a fundamental part of your preparation. With simulation we build controlled experiences to make students reflect, learn, train and enter into a process of continuous improvement.
• Throughout the degree, in addition to becoming doctors, we train students to take the MIR exam, carrying out workshops, tests and simulations. In the exams, MedPlus questions are integrated as training (25% of the questions in the MIR exam are taken from MedPLus). In addition, we provide the manuals to prepare for the MIR and incorporate them into the teaching.
• You will also be able to attend congresses and be in direct contact with top specialists, such as the training given at UAX by Dr. Mariano Barbacid on precision medicine in oncology.

Students of the Degree in Medicine at the Alfonso X el Sabio University carry out their studies in a series of hospital teaching units, each with its own characteristics that enrich their academic and professional training from the third year until the end of the degree. In addition, from the 5th and 6th year onwards, they undertake clinical training linked to Family and Community Medicine in different Primary Care Centres throughout the Community of Madrid.

• North Teaching Unit: Villalba General University Hospital.

Located in the north of the Community of Madrid, the General University Hospital of Villalba is renowned for its modern infrastructure and innovative approach to healthcare. Here, students receive theoretical and practical training in the same centre, which facilitates full integration into hospital life from the very beginning. The rotations offered include Anaesthesia and Resuscitation, Cardiology, General and Digestive Surgery, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Traumatology, Geriatrics, Gynaecology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Urology, Oncology, Intensive Care Unit, Neurosurgery and Maxillofacial Surgery, among other services.

• Central Teaching Unit: San Francisco de Asís University Hospital and San José and Santa Adela Red Cross University Hospital.

Located in the heart of Madrid, this teaching unit stands out for the accessibility of its hospitals and for combining historic centres with modern medical resources. The theoretical part takes place at both the Hospital Universitario San Francisco de Asís and the Hospital Universitario Cruz Roja, while the practical part is carried out in all the hospitals that make up this unit. The specialities available include Allergology, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, as well as all the fundamental medical and surgical specialities such as Cardiology, Neurology, Dermatology and Traumatology, among others.

• Southern Teaching Unit: Hospital Universitario Severo Ochoa, Hospital Universitario del Tajo, Hospital Asociado Virgen de la Poveda, Hospital Universitario José Germain and Hospital Fundación Instituto San José.

The south of the region offers students an exceptional diversity in terms of clinical settings and training possibilities. Lectures are given in the lecture hall of the Severo Ochoa University Hospital, while practicals are distributed among the various hospitals and health centres in the area. Rotations in services such as Psychiatry (at the José Germain Hospital), Pathological Anatomy, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pneumology, Urology, Rheumatology, Oncology, and other key specialties, providing a broad and varied view of professional practice.

• Chamberí Teaching Unit: Fundación Jiménez Díaz University Hospital.

Linked to the urban campus of Arapiles, right in the centre of Madrid, this hospital enjoys great national and international prestige thanks to its recognised healthcare and research work. Theoretical training is given at the University's campus at Arapiles 13, while practical training takes place entirely at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz. This centre offers outstanding specialities such as Cardiology, General and Digestive Surgery, Haematology, Nephrology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine, guaranteeing a complete and specialised training.

The choice of teaching unit is made through a rigorous process based on the preferences expressed by the students and their academic records, thus ensuring that each student can develop their clinical skills and interests to the maximum in an optimal environment. Once assigned to a unit, students remain in that unit for the duration of their clinical training, facilitating deep immersion and educational continuity essential for their professional future.

The Medicine degree at UAX has academic internships in all courses so that students can deal with clinical situations of increasing complexity as their training progresses.

Clinical placements are carried out in first class centres. Our students carry out clinical rotations in almost all departments (they rotate through 38 of the 44 total specialities in Medicine).

Students of the Medicine degree will also be able to access the SICUE Mobility Programme and there is a collaboration agreement for the academic year 2023-2024 with the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona.

The Bachelor's Degree in Medicine is aimed at students with a Baccalaureate, Vocational Training or equivalent qualifications who have passed the University Entrance Exams (PAU) and are interested in developing their profile as doctors. The Bachelor's Degree in Medicine at UAX has 180 places available for new students.

SPECIFIC ENTRANCE EXAM FOR THE DEGREE IN MEDICINE

It consists of two parts:

• First part: multiple-choice exam in Biology (30 questions) and Chemistry (20 questions).
• Second part: Personal interview
  

SCORING CRITERIA FOR THE ADMISSION PROCESS

The scoring criteria for the admission process will be as follows:

• University Entrance Examination (PAU) and Baccalaureate or Vocational Training record.
• Examination of the specific test
• Positive general psycho-technical test of the University
• English language proficiency test
• Students who can accredit their knowledge of one of the following languages - French, German, Italian - by an official body
• Others: UAX graduates and graduates, etc...

If you wish to study for a degree in medicine, you should know that the duration of this degree is 6 years and 360 ECTS credits.

After completing your medical degree, you can opt for the following career opportunities without the MIR: in the private sector, such as nursing homes, sporting events, private medical centres, research or military health care.

However, one of the most common doubts is whether the MIR is compulsory. The Medical Internship Residency Examination (MIR) is a test required to gain access to a position as a specialist doctor, and this training as a resident lasts an estimated 4-5 years. Once this time has elapsed, you will be able to practise your profession as a doctor in the National Health System.

Therefore, if your intention in studying medicine is to access the National Health System, the MIR is a mandatory requirement.

By studying medicine at the Alfonso X el Sabio University you will be able to learn about the different specialties and find the one you are passionate about. In Spain there are 49 medical specialties divided into clinical, surgical, medical-surgical and laboratory specialties. Some of them are:

• Internal medicine, which deals comprehensively with health problems in adult patients.
• Digestive system, which treats diseases of the entire digestive system.
• Cardiology, which deals with the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
• Pneumology, deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory system.
• Psychiatry, which deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.

We advise you to inform yourself in detail about all the available medical specialties in order to decide which one you want to pursue after studying medicine.

The recommended entry profile to study medicine is the Baccalaureate student, preferably in Health Sciences, with a passed EVAU.

When studying the UAX medicine degree you will have to carry out increasingly complex internships from 1st to 6th year in the UAX Virtual Simulation Hospital. Beginning in the first years with basic examinations, interpretation of X-rays, auscultations, etc... until the 6th year, when you tackle highly complex multidisciplinary clinical cases.

In the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, practical sessions are carried out in the laboratory and in the dissection room (Anatomy subject). Visits are made to the Forensic Anatomical Institute, the National Court and the Higher Sports Centre. At the HVS they will carry out procedural training as many times as they need to train skills and abilities. They will also have online practice with Practicum Script (Clinical Reasoning software to train decision-making). Up to 49 practical workshops

From 3rd year onwards, you will choose a Teaching Unit in a hospital to carry out your clinical placements. You will be able to do rotations in more than 38 specialities and services, to discover the area you like best.
