Alfonso X el Sabio University (UAX) and the Carlos III National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) have signed a framework collaboration agreement with the aim of laying the foundations for the joint development of advanced research projects, the training of researchers and the promotion of scientific initiatives of excellence in the fields of health sciences and biomedicine.

This agreement, which will initially run for three years, represents a strategic alliance that will foster interaction between CNIC researchers and UAX lecturers and researchers, enhance the development of scientific talent through curricular and extracurricular placements for undergraduate students and pre-doctoral fellowships, and promote the participation of CNIC researchers in the university’s academic activities.

As part of the celebrations marking this partnership, Dr Borja Ibáñez, scientific director of the CNIC, a cardiologist at the Jiménez Díaz Foundation and group leader at the CIBERCV, gave a lecture at UAX entitled ‘CNIC: a centre for translational research’, in which he highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and research centres to accelerate the transfer of scientific knowledge into clinical practice.

In addition to the framework educational agreement, a specific agreement has been signed to establish and fund the UAX-CNIC pre-doctoral fellowship. UAX PhD students will be eligible for this unique opportunity to carry out their doctoral thesis at the CNIC, thereby reinforcing both institutions’ shared commitment to the training of young researchers.

“At Alfonso X el Sabio University, we understand educational excellence as the ability to generate and transfer advanced technical and scientific knowledge that is applicable and relevant to society. Collaboration with leading institutions is key to driving high-level research projects and strengthening our role as an active agent in the advancement of science. Together with the CNIC, we aim to advance the development of a research ecosystem that contributes to medical progress and people’s well-being, ” says Aida Suárez, Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Both institutions guarantee standards of excellence in research. UAX will provide its own premises and resources for the development of joint projects, making biomedical laboratory facilities equipped with the latest research technologies available to pre-doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. For its part, the CNIC will provide the necessary technical supervision and material resources, as well as overseeing the scientific training of the researchers.

In the words of Dr Borja Ibáñez, “this agreement reinforces our commitment to training new generations of scientists and to creating a collaborative environment where biomedical research can advance more rapidly and robustly. Together with UAX, we are taking a decisive step towards promoting high-impact projects and offering young researchers real opportunities for growth within a scientific environment of excellence”.

The partnership between UAX and CNIC marks the starting point of a strategic collaboration that will grow through new joint scientific initiatives and future specific agreements. The aim is to consolidate an ecosystem of excellence in research and training in a key area for global health, given that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Making progress in this field reinforces both institutions’ commitment to prevention, medical advancement and social wellbeing.
