What can an industrial systems engineer do?

Before going into detail by sector, it is worth understanding the rationale behind the versatility of this role. Over the course of a four-year degree, you will acquire skills in mechanics, electrical engineering, automation, thermodynamics, logistics and project management. This combination means you could work in the technical department of a factory, in the project office of a consultancy firm, in the operations management team of an industrial company or in the sustainability department of a large corporation.

UAX’s industrial systems engineers transform ideas into solutions in key sectors of industry and technology: from the design of mechanical to the management of facilities and certain strategic aspects of organisations.

The main career paths, by area

There is no single career path for this qualification. Depending on your interests and the optional modules you choose, you can steer your career towards very different areas, all of which are in high demand and offer good working conditions.

Production and industrial operations

This is the most natural career path and one of the most in-demand. As a production or operations engineer, your role involves keeping the plant running efficiently: optimising processes, reducing cycle times, ensuring manufacturing quality and coordinating technical teams.

This role is relevant to virtually any sector with manufacturing capabilities: mechanical engineering , the chemical, agri-food, pharmaceutical, plastics and construction materials sectors. The starting salary for a junior role in production is around €28,000–35,000 gross per annum, with rapid progression to €45,000–55,000 with experience.

Automation, control and industrial electronics

One of the profiles with the greatest prospects within the context of Industry 4.0. Automation engineers design and implement the systems that enable machines to operate with as little human intervention as possible: PLC controllers, SCADA systems, industrial robotics , sensors and industrial communications.

Demand for this role is growing year on year as companies accelerate their digital transformation. The most active sectors are the automotive, electronics, chemical and energy industries. Salaries for automation specialists typically range from €32,000 to €55,000, with senior roles exceeding €60,000.

Energy, sustainability and the environment

The energy transition has made this field one of the most dynamic in the labour market for industrial engineers. Career opportunities in this sector include:

  • Design and supervision of renewable energy installations (solar photovoltaic, wind, biomass).
  • Energy audits and efficiency certification for buildings and industrial facilities.
  • Environmental management and compliance with environmental regulations in production processes.
  • Engineering of heating and air-conditioning systems in buildings and industrial facilities.

This is an area where the undergraduate programme’s training in Thermodynamics, Turbomachinery and Sustainable Industry links directly to real-world work. Salaries range from €30,000 to €50,000 for technical roles, with significant opportunities for career progression into renewable energy project management roles.

Design, calculation and maintenance of installations

Industrial systems engineers are qualified to design, calculate and maintain industrial installations of all kinds: low- and medium-voltage electrical installations, hydraulic and air-conditioning systems, industrial ventilation systems, and machine structures and components.

This role offers opportunities both in engineering and technical consultancy firms and in the maintenance departments of large facilities (hospitals, logistics centres, industrial plants, infrastructure). Industrial maintenance, in particular, is one of the fields offering the most stable employment opportunities: the head of maintenance is a key figure in any plant, with salaries ranging from €35,000 to €60,000 or more in large facilities.

Project management and engineering consultancy

Major consultancy firms (both engineering and strategy) and professional services companies recruit industrial engineers for their analytical skills and systems thinking. As a project manager or technical consultant, your role involves planning, coordinating and executing complex projects, which can range from setting up a production line to certifying quality management systems or optimising the supply chain.

This is one of the roles with the greatest earning potential: a project manager with 5–8 years’ experience can earn between €45,000 and €65,000, whilst project directors at large consultancy firms frequently earn over €80,000.

Public administration

The public sector also employs industrial systems engineers through various channels. There is the option of joining the State Corps of Industrial Engineers (subgroup A1) via a competitive examination, which offers stability and highly competitive remuneration: an entry-level engineer in the public sector can earn around €41,600 gross per annum, with long-term progression that can exceed €100,000 at senior levels.

Career opportunities in the public sector include regulatory bodies, industrial inspection, regional government, local councils with extensive infrastructure, and public bodies linked to energy and the environment.

Teaching and research

Although it is not the most common career path, there is a group of engineers who opt for an academic career or vocational training. To teach on higher-level vocational training courses related to industry, you need the Master’s in Teaching is required to teach on industry-related higher-level vocational training courses. For university teaching or research, the usual route involves completing a specialised Master’s degree and, subsequently, a PhD.

Which companies recruit industrial systems engineers?

One of the things that most surprises those studying this degree is the variety of companies that end up hiring its graduates. The role is not limited to traditional manufacturing: the combination of mechanical, electrical, automation and management knowledge makes them valuable professionals across a wide range of sectors.

Here are some of the most common company roles, organised by sector:

  • Industry and manufacturing: major groups in the automotive sector, industrial machinery, electrical equipment and component manufacturing. Companies such as Siemens, Renault and Stellantis are common employers for production, automation and design engineers.
  • Construction and infrastructure: civil engineering and plant engineering firms that require professionals capable of designing and supervising complex industrial installations. Sacyr and Acciona are typical examples of this type of employer.
  • Technology and consultancy: a sector that is growing year on year. Technology and engineering consultancies recruit industrial engineers for digital transformation projects, process optimisation and operations management. IBM, Indra, Accenture and Capgemini are common names in this field.
  • Aerospace and defence sector: perhaps the least expected destination, but a very real one. Companies such as Airbus, Hispasat, Thales Alenia Space and GMV work with industrial systems engineers in areas of advanced manufacturing, control systems and the management of complex technical projects.
  • Aviation and transport: airlines and technical maintenance companies (MROs) are looking for engineers to manage facilities, maintain equipment and undertake operational efficiency projects.

What all these companies have in common is that they are looking for candidates capable of understanding complex systems, solving technical problems and coordinating teams. This is precisely what this degree programme focuses on from the very first year.

How much does an industrial systems engineer earn?

Salary progression in this profession is among the most robust on the Spanish job market. Here is a realistic breakdown by stage:

Stage Experience Gross annual salary
Junior0–2 years€28,000 – €35,000
Intermediate3–5 years€38,000 – €55,000
Senior10+ years€55,000 – €90,000
ManagementVariable€70,000 – €110,000

The factors that most influence salary are specialisation (automation and Industry 4.0 are the best-paid areas), the sector (the large chemical and energy industries, as well as consultancy, pay above average), and location (Madrid and the Basque Country account for the highest-paying roles).

Are there international opportunities?

Yes, and there are plenty. The skills of an industrial systems engineer are perfectly transferable to any country with an industrial base. The most common destinations for Spanish professionals are Germany, France, the Netherlands and the Persian Gulf countries (Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE), where industrial and energy infrastructure projects have a very high demand for specialised engineers. Proficiency in technical English, which is studied from the first year of the degree programme, is the minimum requirement for accessing these opportunities.

Conclusion

The Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Systems Engineering offers one of the broadest and most stable career paths within the Spanish university system. You can work in production, automation, energy, consultancy, facility design or the public sector, with competitive salaries from your first year and a career progression that can lead to very attractive earnings as you gain experience. The key lies in choosing your optional modules wisely during the degree, undertaking a good work placement and, if you want to stand out, complementing your education with a postgraduate qualification aligned with the sector that interests you most.
