Eating is a voluntary and conscious act in which we choose and consume food to meet our body’s physiological and energy needs.
Nutrition, on the other hand, is the set of processes that take place in the body after eating, that is, as soon as food is placed in the mouth. These processes encompass the absorption, transport, metabolism and excretion of the nutrients contained in food. Nutrition is an involuntary and unconscious process in which the body digests food, extracts the necessary nutrients and uses them to maintain vital functions, support growth, produce energy and ensure the proper functioning of our metabolism.
To achieve good nutrition, it is essential to follow a varied and balanced diet that includes foods from all food groups in appropriate quantities. This means consuming a wide variety of healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats, which will have a positive impact on our physical and emotional wellbeing.
In today’s society, characterised by a fast-paced and hectic lifestyle, it is common to find people who opt for fast food, ultra-processed foods and foods of poor nutritional quality; this eating pattern has a negative impact on health. We must not forget that a poor diet can lead to nutritional problems, such as nutritional deficiencies or excess calories, which can result in long-term health issues.
