Alfonso X el Sabio University (UAX) and Oviedo City Council have today signed an agreement that will enable the establishment of a new flagship university campus in the Calatrava building, in the Buenavista neighbourhood.
This project aims to establish a centre of excellence in health and technology in Oviedo, fostering local talent, innovation in the life sciences and internationalisation. The new University Centre affiliated with UAX will commence its academic activities in Asturias in the 2026–27 academic year, offering degrees in Medicine and Nursing.
During the event, Jesús Núñez, president of UAX, stated that “universities, business schools and specialised training centres have a mission: to anticipate the needs of an ecosystem that is increasingly demanding specialised talent. We want to help attract talent, yes, but also to develop and retain it. All of this through excellence, innovation and commitment. Alfonso X el Sabio University will offer a rigorous and responsible academic programme in Oviedo”.
For his part, Alfredo Canteli, Mayor of Oviedo, emphasised that “the arrival of Alfonso X el Sabio University in Oviedo is a key milestone for our city. We are talking about breathing new life into a neighbourhood that had been left behind following the departure of the central hospital. For this reason, I can only thank Jesús Núñez for choosing Oviedo as the location for the opening of this new centre.”
