Alfonso X el Sabio Mare Nostrum University has today opened its campus in Málaga. The site, covering more than 27,000 square metres, combines sustainability and innovation to enhance its students’ education. The first of the three buildings that will make up this state-of-the-art university campus is now operational and ready to start the academic year next week.
“The opening of UAX Mare Nostrum in Málaga marks the culmination of a process that began in 2021 with the tendering of municipal land to facilitate the arrival of private universities in the city. We are thus fostering significant investment and, consequently, boosting job creation,” said Francisco de la Torre, Mayor of Málaga . “Today marks the start of a new era for higher education, not only in our municipality and the province, but also across Andalusia. It should be noted that the City Council will receive a fee of almost 118 million euros and that, each academic year, 2.4 million euros will be allocated to scholarships that will benefit students from Málaga, covering 100 per cent of the tuition fees for all modules of the degree programme.”
For his part, Luis Couceiro, Vice-Chancellor of UAX Mare Nostrum, highlighted the driving role of collaboration between public and private institutions that has given rise to this campus. “UAX Mare Nostrum aims to be a hub for innovation and collaboration, fostering talent and the transfer of knowledge to society through close collaboration with businesses and institutions. The aim is to generate a positive impact that translates into employment for our students and economic development for Málaga and the world.”
The event also featured a keynote lecture entitled “From the bench to the bedside: the present and future of precision medicine”, delivered by the Honourable Mr Rafael Garesse, former Vice-Chancellor of the Autonomous University of Madrid and a member of the Malaga Academy of Sciences.
The campus boasts innovative facilities, including sports facilities and communal areas that foster creativity and collaborative work amongst students. Furthermore, its classrooms are equipped with the latest technologies and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that students acquire the skills and abilities demanded by the labour market.
In total, more than 400 students will be able to begin their studies at UAX Mare Nostrum in the 2025–26 academic year. Ten per cent of these students come from abroad and will benefit from the educational experience offered by UAX Mare Nostrum to further their studies in a cosmopolitan environment that combines culture, technological innovation and quality of life.
UAX Mare Nostrum is launching the academic year by offering programmes in the fields of study currently in greatest demand: Business and Technology, with degrees in Business Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Computing; Health and Sport, with degrees in Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) and Biomedicine; and Art and Design, where it will offer a degree in Video Game Design.
For over a year, UAX Mare Nostrum has been working on establishing its presence in Málaga by entering into agreements with local institutions, such as the University of Málaga (UMA), Málaga CF and Unicaja, in addition to others including Quirónsalud, Acciona and Avanade, amongst others. These partnerships will enable the development of joint projects in which students will participate, thereby enhancing their practical training and their links with the real world of work from the very first years of their studies.
With this opening, UAX Mare Nostrum is taking a further step in its commitment to the economic and social growth of Málaga and Andalusia, through the development of competitive, globally-minded talent.
