UAX is launching its academic programme at the Alfonso X el Sabio Asturias University Centre with degree courses in Medicine and Nursing
At Alfonso X el Sabio University, we have commenced our academic activities at our new campus in Asturias with the arrival of our first intake of students. We opened our classrooms for the Medicine and Nursing degree programmes. With this step, we are embarking on a new phase focused on the health sciences, where we link university education with professional practice and the new challenges facing the healthcare system.
We are bringing our educational model to Asturias, based on excellence and a predominantly practical education that incorporates technology applied to the professional sphere. In the field of health, we are committed to a holistic approach that includes the use of advanced clinical simulation and training in Digital Health. We also integrate the One Health perspective, through which we address human, animal and environmental health in an interrelated manner.
For the Medicine degree programme, we incorporate training in Digital Health, covering areas such as telemedicine, predictive medicine and data analysis. Furthermore, we include a specific programme to prepare students for the MIR (Residency Entrance Examination), alongside thousands of hours of external placements rotating through multiple specialities. Meanwhile, in the Nursing programme, we combine pre-clinical simulation with extensive clinical placements that our students undertake in social and healthcare centres, hospitals and primary care settings.
We have a teaching staff with strong links to the healthcare sector, led by Dr Jaime Algorta, who brings extensive experience in teaching, research and clinical management. Our teaching team consists of practising professionals. In this way, we ensure high-quality teaching, training professionals with a solid clinical grounding, strong teamwork skills and a holistic view of health.
We maintain strong links with the Asturian healthcare ecosystem through agreements covering work placements, teaching and research. We actively collaborate with hospitals, social and healthcare centres, biotechnology companies and the Principality’s professional bodies. In this way, we enhance our students’ practical training and promote professional development to attract and retain talent in the region.
Our headquarters are located in the iconic Calatrava building in Oviedo, where we have a spacious campus dedicated to the healthcare sector. Highlights of these facilities include our Virtual Simulation Hospital, alongside specialised laboratories and state-of-the-art classrooms. Thanks to these facilities, we guarantee an immersive learning model in which students work with the technological tools they will use in their future working environment.
With these degree programmes, we are laying the foundations for our academic activity in the region, consolidating our institution’s commitment to innovation. We are already planning to expand our academic offering through postgraduate programmes in healthcare leadership and management. Furthermore, we plan to gradually introduce new health-related undergraduate degrees, strengthening the university ecosystem to foster our students’ development.
