How to study at an online university in Spain from another country
It is possible to study online at a Spanish university from another country without moving permanently to Spain. To apply for admission, you will need to meet the academic requirements for the degree programme, submit the relevant documentation and check how classes, exams and work placements are organised.
The procedures do not depend solely on your nationality. Other factors include the education system in which you completed your studies, the country where your qualifications were awarded, the type of programme, and whether you wish to study for a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree.
To enrol on a bachelor’s degree, you may need to provide proof of entry requirements or have your prior qualifications recognised. For certain master’s programmes, the university itself may verify that a foreign qualification is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and allows you to undertake a postgraduate course in the country where it was awarded, without requiring prior recognition.
You should also distinguish between studying from your home country and moving to Spain. Enrolment on an online degree programme does not automatically grant a visa or a residence permit.
Can a foreign national study online at a Spanish university?
Yes. Being a foreign national does not prevent you from applying for a place at a Spanish university. If the course is taught online and the conditions allow it, you can attend classes and access the virtual campus from your country of residence.
However, before enrolling, you must check:
- The entry requirements.
- The language of instruction.
- The timetable.
- The time zone used.
- The format of the exams.
- Whether work placements are available.
- Face-to-face activities.
- The validity of the qualification in the country where you wish to use it.
- Technical and internet connection requirements.
An online bachelor’s or master’s degree still follows an academic timetable. Although you may not need to attend campus regularly, there may be live classes, assignments with specific deadlines, group work and scheduled assessments.
That’s why studying from abroad isn’t just about having an internet connection. You must also ensure that you’ll be able to meet all the programme’s requirements from your place of residence.
What you should check before applying for admission
Before starting the process, review the programme details and check with the university regarding any conditions that are not clearly stated.
Whether the degree is an official degree or a university-specific qualification
Official university degrees are registered in the Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees and are officially recognised in Spain. University-specific or continuing education degrees are awarded by the university but have a different academic status.
This distinction may affect access to PhD programmes, civil service examinations, regulated professions or recognition procedures in other countries.
Academic requirements
A bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree require different prior qualifications. Furthermore, the procedure may vary depending on the country and the education system of origin.
Language
Check in which language classes are taught, assignments are submitted and examinations are held. The university may require you to provide evidence of a certain level of proficiency.
Timetables
Classes may be held according to Spanish mainland time. The time difference with your home country may vary throughout the year due to time changes.
Exams
Some degree programmes allow you to sit exams online, whilst others include in-person exams or the option to sit them at a designated centre.
Work placements
An online degree programme may include in-person work placements at a company, institution or centre. You should check whether these can be carried out in your country and what procedure the university follows to approve the host organisation.
Requirements for studying an online degree in Spain from abroad
To gain entry to a university degree programme, you must have completed studies that qualify you for university entry and complete the relevant admission procedure.
The procedures vary depending on your country’s education system.
Students from the European Union and systems with applicable agreements
Students from education systems in European Union member states or other countries with applicable international agreements may be admitted if they meet the academic requirements set by their own system for university entry.
In these cases, it is not always necessary to have your qualifications recognised as equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato qualification. You may apply for accreditation confirming:
- Fulfilment of the entry requirements.
- The studies completed.
- The marks obtained.
- The equivalence used for the admissions process.
The university may also apply its own admission criteria, such as interviews, aptitude tests or requirements linked to a specific degree programme.
Students from other education systems
Where studies have been undertaken in a system not listed above, it may be necessary to have them recognised as equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato qualification.
Recognition is the procedure by which the Spanish authorities acknowledge that foreign non-university studies are equivalent to a Spanish qualification.
It will usually be necessary to provide:
- Certificate or diploma.
- Academic transcript.
- Proof of the applicant’s identity.
- Official documentation of the studies undertaken.
- Proof of payment of the fee, where applicable.
- Legalisation or apostille.
- Official translation into Spanish if the documents are in another language.
Documents must be official. Requirements regarding legalisation, apostille and translation depend on the country of issue and the agreements in force.
Not all international students follow exactly the same process. Before starting the recognition process, check with the university to find out which documents you need for your country and your qualification.
Requirements for studying an online Master’s degree with a foreign qualification
Admission to a master’s degree programme is governed by different criteria to those for a bachelor’s degree.
Qualifications from the European Higher Education Area
Admission is open to anyone holding a university qualification of the relevant level issued by a university or higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area, provided that such a qualification allows the holder to undertake master’s-level studies in the country of issue.
In addition, the student must meet the specific requirements set for the programme.
Qualifications from systems outside the European Higher Education Area
Individuals holding university qualifications awarded outside the European Higher Education Area may also be admitted without the need for prior recognition, provided that:
- The university verifies that the level of education is equivalent to that of a bachelor’s degree.
- The qualification allows access to postgraduate university studies in the country where it was awarded.
- The specific admission requirements for the Master’s programme are met.
The university may request the qualification, the academic transcript and a document certifying that these studies grant access to postgraduate study within the system of origin.
This route of entry does not imply the equivalence of the foreign qualification or its recognition for other academic or professional purposes. The verification is carried out solely to determine whether the student is eligible for the master’s programme applied for.
In the case of master’s programmes leading to professional qualifications, regulated professions or programmes with specific academic requirements, additional conditions may apply.
What documents are usually required?
The exact list depends on the programme, the country and the admission procedure. As a general guide, the following may be required:
- Passport or identity card.
- Previous academic qualification.
- Official transcript of marks.
- Curriculum or course syllabuses.
- Document proving that the qualification grants entry to university or a postgraduate programme.
- Equivalence or accreditation certificate, where applicable.
- Legalisation or apostille.
- Official translation.
- Curriculum vitae.
- Language certificate.
- Letter of motivation.
- Specific documentation relating to the degree.
In academic documents, the course titles, credits or hours studied, marks and the total duration of the programme are usually relevant.
Always use the official channels provided by the university. Do not send passports, certificates or other personal details to addresses or via forms whose authenticity you cannot verify.
Recognition, equivalence and validation: the differences
These terms do not mean the same thing and serve different purposes.
Procedure | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Recognition of non-university qualifications | Recognises equivalence with a Spanish qualification, such as the Bachillerato qualification |
| Recognition of a university degree | Recognises equivalence with a Spanish qualification that grants access to a regulated profession |
| Declaration of equivalence | Recognises the academic level of a foreign university qualification, without in itself qualifying the holder for a regulated profession |
| Credit validation or recognition | Assesses prior studies to recognise specific subjects within a new degree programme |
| Assessment for entry to a master’s degree | Verifies that the foreign qualification meets the required standard and grants access to postgraduate programmes; it does not officially recognise the qualification |
If you have started a degree programme in another country and wish to continue it in Spain, the university may review the modules you have passed to determine which credits can be recognised. The outcome depends on the equivalence between the course content, the learning outcomes and the curriculum of the host institution.
You can consult UAX’s procedure for the validation and recognition of credits.
Is it necessary to know Spanish?
It depends on the language in which the degree programme is taught. If the lectures, materials and assessments are in Spanish, you will need a sufficient level of Spanish to understand academic content, participate in classes and write assignments.
The university may require:
- An official certificate.
- A test set by the university itself.
- An interview.
- Documentation proving previous studies in Spanish.
UAX states in its undergraduate admissions information that international students from non-Spanish-speaking countries must sit a Spanish language test as part of the admissions process.
Some degree programmes may be taught wholly or partly in English and require the relevant accreditation. You should also consider the language of any work placements: even if the programme is online, a partner organisation may require Spanish or another language.
How time zone differences affect you
If you are studying from another country, you should check which activities are scheduled according to Spanish mainland time. The time difference may affect classes, tutorials, group work and exams.
Before enrolling, check:
- How many classes are taught live.
- Whether attendance is compulsory.
- Whether the sessions are recorded.
- At what times the exams take place.
- What the deadline is for assignments.
- Whether there are different groups.
- How tutorials are organised.
Spain and your country may or may not change the time on different dates. Therefore, the time difference may not remain the same throughout the academic year.
For activities with a deadline, check whether a time zone is specified. Do not assume that the end of the day corresponds to 23:59 in your country.
You can find out the differences between live and pre-recorded online classes before choosing a programme.
What are exams like when taken from another country?
The format depends on the degree programme. Exams may be taken online, in person or via a combination of both options.
An online exam may require:
- Access to a platform.
- Student identification.
- A compatible computer.
- A camera and microphone.
- A stable internet connection.
- Remote supervision.
- Adherence to a set timetable.
With other programmes, you may need to attend a campus. UAX has national and international campuses for certain degree programmes, subject to availability and capacity.
Before enrolling, ask:
- Whether all exams can be taken online.
- Whether there are any compulsory in-person exams.
- Which campuses are available for your programme.
- In which time zone the exam schedule is published.
- What forms of identification are accepted.
- What technical requirements are needed.
You can consult our guide on how online exams work and the national and international exam centres run by UAX.
Can work placements be carried out in another country?
This depends on the degree programme, the applicable regulations and the organisation where the placement takes place.
To authorise an internship outside Spain, the university may need to verify:
- The suitability of the organisation.
- The duties the student will perform.
- The relevance to the degree programme’s learning outcomes.
- The provision of a supervisor.
- The number of hours.
- The necessary documentation or agreement.
- The monitoring and assessment arrangements.
For degree programmes related to regulated professions, there may be additional requirements regarding host organisations, supervision or professional recognition.
You should not assume that your work placement can automatically be carried out at any organisation in your own country. Please check this before finalising your enrolment, particularly if you are unable to travel to Spain.
Do you need a visa to study online in Spain?
The answer depends on where you will be living.
If you are studying from your own country
You do not need a Spanish visa to join classes from outside Spain. Nor will you be granted a residence or work permit simply by enrolling on an online degree programme.
You may need to travel occasionally if the programme includes exams, work placements or other face-to-face activities. In that case, you’ll need to check the entry requirements applicable to your nationality and the duration of your trip.
If you want to move to Spain
Admission to a programme does not automatically guarantee the granting of a visa or a residence permit.
Immigration requirements depend on the type of programme, the duration of your studies, your personal circumstances and current regulations. If you wish to reside in Spain, please check the latest information from the Ministry of Inclusion and the relevant Spanish consulate before enrolling.
The university can provide academic documentation regarding your admission, but the decision on immigration matters rests with the relevant authorities.
Is a Spanish online degree recognised in another country?
In Spain, an official university degree retains its academic status regardless of whether the mode of delivery is face-to-face, blended or online. Its official status can be verified in the Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees.
However, its use in another country depends on the legislation of the destination country. It may be necessary to:
- Have the degree legalised.
- Obtain a Hague Apostille.
- Submit an official translation.
- Apply for recognition.
- Arrange for academic recognition.
- Have subjects and hours accredited.
- Meet additional professional requirements.
This is particularly important in regulated professions, such as certain healthcare, teaching, legal or technical roles. An official Spanish qualification does not automatically qualify you to practise a regulated profession in every country.
Before enrolling, check with the relevant authority in the country where you wish to use your qualification. The Spanish university can provide information about the nature of the programme, but cannot guarantee the decision that a foreign authority will make.
How do I apply for admission to UAX from another country?
