What will you learn on this course on the microbiota and diet?

In this course, you will explore the relationship between diet and the gut microbiota, learning to identify nutrients, foods and dietary patterns that can influence its balance. The course will also help you to critically evaluate messages and products relating to gut health.

Upon completion of the micro-credential, you will be able to:

  • Explain how diet influences the composition, diversity and metabolic activity
    of the gut microbiota. 
  • Describe the role of fibre, prebiotics, resistant starch and
    polyphenols in gut health. 
  • Identify dietary sources relevant to the modulation of the microbiota,
    such as pulses, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. 
  • Carefully analyse the potential impact of fats, proteins,
    sweeteners, additives and ultra-processed foods on the microbiota. 
  • Assess the importance of introducing dietary changes gradually and
    tailored to individual tolerance.
