Understanding, assessing and addressing psychological harm
Psychological distress, particularly when associated with traumatic experiences, is one of the most complex phenomena in contemporary psychological practice. Addressing it requires integrating clinical symptoms, the cognitive processes involved, and the conditions under which the distress develops and manifests itself.
Assessing psychological harm presents specific challenges, particularly in interpreting variables such as memory, the coherence of the narrative or the subjectivity of the experience, which can influence both diagnosis and intervention.
Furthermore, in the legal sphere, the assessment of psychological harm takes on an additional dimension, as it can influence aspects such as the determination of liability or the quantification of harm, which demands sound technical criteria and a rigorous assessment.
In this context, this session offers an opportunity to approach psychological harm from a holistic perspective:
- Clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention, particularly in cases involving trauma
- The impact on cognitive processes such as memory, attention and emotional regulation
- Its role in forensic assessment and its relevance in legal proceedings
A subject with strong links to current social issues and with direct applications across various areas of professional psychology practice.
